Better service and new hiring when ICA opens e-commerce warehouse in Gothenburg

ICA Sweden, in collaboration with NCC, is building a 17,000 square metre e-commerce warehouse on Arenadalsvägen in Gothenburg. The warehouse will fulfil orders for ICA store customers with home deliveries seven days a week. When the warehouse opens, which is expected to take place at the end of 2020, it will have some 100 to 150 employees, but over time this may increase to more than 500.

ICA began doing e-commerce business in 2015 and has since then become the largest player in grocery e-commerce. Last year an e-commerce warehouse opened in Stockholm to serve ICA stores with picking and home delivery to their e-commerce customers. At the end of 2020 ICA will begin the same service in Gothenburg.

“E-commerce is growing fast in Gothenburg, and customers are putting higher demands on deliveries and the range, comments Anders Svensson, CEO of ICA Sweden. “Many ICA stores in the greater Gothenburg area have made successful ventures into e-commerce, but the volumes have now reached a level where it is easier and more efficient for the ICA stores to coordinate order picking and deliveries in a joint e-commerce warehouse. At the same time, we will be able to offer better service to customers.”

The warehouse will have total area of 17,000 sq.m. and will be dimensioned to be able to accommodate future volume growth. Deliveries are planned to be conducted by ICA’s own employees in specially adapted delivery vehicles to ensure delivery quality and an unbroken cold chain the entire path to the customer.
