The market for groceries, food and meals is changing. There is a noticeable blurring of the lines between sectors, with more and more overlap between different operators’ offerings. In parallel, consumption patterns are changing fast in terms of what, when and where consumption takes place. Today, for example, restaurants and cafés account for a third of food and meal consumption in Sweden. The largest food retailers are ICA, Axfood, Coop och Bergendahls who represent around 70 procent of the market.
Sales of grocery retail in 2017 amounted to SEK 296.1 billion, an increase of 2.1 percent according to Sweden national statistics (SCB and HUI). ICA’s total grocery retail turnover was SEK 114.3 billion in 2017, an increase by 3.0 percent compared to 2016.
